Minimize Risk by Automating Schema Change Management

With demanding service level requirements and growing
compliance needs, IT organizations have to proactively
manage changes to their data and database infrastructures.
Proactive change management not only requires tracking
and managing but also auditing and reporting database
schema, object and security changes. Effective change
management is an increasingly daunting task as most
IT teams support multiple database platforms, frequently
update packaged applications, and implement a growing
number of custom solutions with constrained resources
and shorter time windows.
Embarcadero Change Manager enables IT professionals
to capture, compare and synchronize database schemas
and objects on Oracle®, Sybase®, Microsoft®
SQL Server and IBM DB2 UDB for Linux, UNIX and Windows®.
By automating change management tasks Embarcadero
Change Manager ensures that IT teams retain control
over changes and mitigate the differences between
development and deployment environments. In addition,
Embarcadero Change Manager offers powerful job notification
capabilities, extensive HTML-based reporting facilities,
and integration with popular Source Code Control systems.

Compare, Capture and Synchronize Schema
Embarcadero Change Manager automates and streamlines
the complex and error-prone task of maintaining application
database schemas on multiple platforms. Using a common
interface for all supported DBMS platforms, Embarcadero
Change Manager leverages the skills of experienced
database professionals across multiple DBMS environments.
Embarcadero Change Manager generates comprehensive
and accurate SQL scripts to assist in the deployment
of schema changes to one or more target databases.
In addition to streamlining the schema change process,
Embarcadero Change Manager's Compare facility ensures
that your environment hasn't undergone unexpected
change.
|
|
Compare, Capture and Synchronize Permissions
Embarcadero Change Manager captures database
security objects (e.g., users, logins, roles) and
their detailed security attributes. This allows IT
administrators to quickly identify unauthorized granting
or accidental loss of database permissions. Combined
with its strong reporting capabilities, Change Manager
can automate auditing and reporting of data security
and help IT organizations meet their compliance goals.

|
Capture Facility

The Embarcadero Change Manager Capture Facility allows
data professionals to quickly compare any two schemas
by providing an archive for storing snapshot images
of database schemas (or database schema subsets).
Data professionals can ensure that databases are always
in synch by tracking changes to database schema (or
database schema subset). By leveraging reusable capture
jobs, which version subsequent captures of the same
schema, tracking changes over time is easy. During
capture jobs, data professionals can optionally extract
DDL to create schema change archive audit trails for
compliance purposes. And, Change Manager offers integration
with popular source code control systems allowing
data professionals to safeguard archives and extracted
DDL.

|
Compare Facility

The Compare Facility offers data professionals to
compare, version, and synchronize database schemas
(or database schema subset) to quickly validate, audit,
and report on the differences. Data professionals
can generate synchronization scripts to ensure databases
remain consistent. And, they can generate HTML reports
to communicate changes to a wider audience. Data professionals
can ease database upgrades by comparing different
versions (e.g., Sybase 12.0 to Sybase 12.5.3) before
implementation. Change Manager offers any combination
of comparisons between like platforms (e.g., Oracle
to Oracle), including live-to-live, live-to-archive,
and archive-to-archive so that changes from any given
point in time can be immediately identified. By leveraging
reusable compare jobs, data professional's can quickly
and easily determine the differences from a project
baseline to development, from development to QA test,
and QA test to production.
|
|
Command line execution
Embarcadero Change Manager includes a powerful
command-line utility that allows capture and compare
jobs to be embedded in regular nightly maintenance
scripts. For ongoing maintenance, data professionals
can leverage the reusable Capture and Compare jobs
to ensure that only the expected changes are propagated
to the target environments.
|
|
Notification Capabilities
Data Professionals can receive up to the minute
information about capture and compare jobs through
Change Manager's automatic notification of job completion
or abnormal termination by email. It also can attach
output logs to email notifications to facilitate faster
problem determination.
|
|
Reporting Capabilities
Embarcadero Change Manager creates several
types formatted and comprehensive HTML-based reports,
ensuring that everyone responsible for change control
stays current and informed. And, the reports provide
an effective means for communicating changes to a
wider audience. Reports include:
- Schema comparison summary reports, which provide
a quick reference to each compare operation, easily
identifying when differences have been detected.
- Schema comparison detail reports, outlining
what objects actually changed, including color-coded
DDL differences and synchronization scripts
- Archive version reports, which produce complete
documentation of a schema at any point in time.

|
DBMS Support
Embarcadero Change Manager supports the following
database platforms and versions:
- Oracle 7.3.4, 8.x, 9i, & 10g
- Sybase 11.9.2, 12.0.x, & 12.5.x
- Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 & 2000
- IBM DB2 UDB for LUW 7.x & 8.x
|
|
System Requirements
- Windows NT Version 4, Windows 2000, Windows
XP
- 128 MB RAM, 256 MB suggested
- 50 MB hard disk space for program, more for
schema archives
Notes: To perform scheduling functions, Embarcadero
Change Manager requires either Embarcadero Job Scheduler
or Microsoft's Task Scheduler to be installed on the
same computer.
Embarcadero Change Manager does not require the
installation or maintenance of a separate database
repository. Similarly, Embarcadero Change Manager
does not create or require supporting tables, procedures,
etc. on your databases.
